Where Wine's The Thing

Showing Off

Wine Tasting Saturday January 28th 2012 from 3 t0 6 pm.

The Cellar has some great new wines and we’re going to show them off on Saturday. Three of them you won’t find anywhere else. Searching out the good stuff and having it in the Cellar is our passion. Join us in having found the prizes.

Our initial tasting notes for Olema Sauvignon Blanc 2008 were “nice, not grassy, creamy”; the sort of Sauv. Blanc that we really like. This is a wine out of Napa from Amici Cellars, who’ve been around since 1991 and are one of the small production, hand-crafted wineries of superior quality to whom we love to show the love. Their goal is quality, not quantity using sustainable practices and making great wine. It’s in the 15$ Rondo, so it’s a great value too. What’s not to like?

Who loves rich, dark blackberry-y Malbec? We do. That’s why we’ve got Mi Terruño Malbec 2010 out of Mendoza, Argentina. Another family run vineyard dedicated to bringing excellent value wines to the market, they work with their own vineyards and the small grape farmers of the region to produce “uvas delicioso” (we just made that phrase up, it just means “delicious grapes”).

Flavor, body, Sonoma and Napa juice, and a little French Oak; The Messenger Telegram Merlot has all of this and more. This is a non-vintage wine is made by a small producer, Californian by way of Australia. Their desire and commitment is summed up in their slogan ‘The Art of Farming Great Wine’. Merlot has gotten such a bad rap since the movie “Sideways” and if anything can turn that trend around it’s good wines like this one. All you can do is try it and see.

Minervois Plaisir d’Eulalie 2010 is great French wine from Minervois. Grenache, Syrah, Carignan come from this Estate’s 34 hectares of vineyards located on the terraced hills above the town of La Liviniere; the unofficial Gran Cru of the Minervois. Since its purchase in 1996 by the Coustal family, the vineyards have been farmed Organically and the wines have been restored to the top class of Minervois. You can count on excellent value wines from this region. Other vintages of this wine have made wine magazines lists and mentions and there’s a reason for that – it’s really good.

Undoubtedly while reading this you’ve found the theme for the day; small winery/hand-made wines. Come enjoy the fruits of their labors. Family wines plus value equals a tasting of wines that all retail for less than $19. We’re sure you will enjoy every one. Cheers!

OF NOTE:
We have Sans Liege’s  wine “The Offering” just in. You can’t get it anywhere else, and we could only get 6 bottles. Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre, Viognier – Rhone varietals touched by Curt Shalchlin’s passion and hit with a California wand. Only 67 barrels made.
